Front Desk Docents and Tour Guides
Please Note: Due to COVID-19, the Bay Model remains closed to the public and is not currently accepting volunteers
Imagine San Francisco without the bay. It almost happened. The one-of-a-kind Bay Model is a 1.5 acre, three-dimensional, working hydraulic model (yes! with water!) that helped scientists determine how proposed changes to San Francisco Bay would impact the environment and saved the Bay from destruction. Help us to use the Bay Model to educate the public about the importance of the largest estuary on the West Coast and its impact throughout California and the world. Volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis to provide visitor services by staffing the Bay Model Visitor Center reception desk, answering questions in person and over the phone, and conducting bookstore sales. We are also seeking docents to lead public tours of the model, including leading school groups, on topics from bay and watershed ecology, tides and currents, history of the delta, hydrology of the bay, and more! Ability to comfortably engage visitors of diverse backgrounds and ages in both formal and informal ways. Ability to meet all Corps volunteer protocols and standards. Ability to work with minimal supervision and conduct research independently.Interest in learning more about the San Francisco Bay and Delta regions, estuary ecology, watersheds and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Background checks required.
