Organization Profile

Golden Gate Opera, (GGO) is dedicated to sharing the joys of music, theatre and the many arts found in operas and new works, with people of all ages and all cultural and economic backgrounds. We do this to inspire a better life, through performances and educational programs, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. The regional opera company of Marin County, California, Golden Gate Opera is a Professional Company Member of Opera America and attends the Opera America Conference annually, building relationships with professional opera companies of North America.   

Since 1997 when GGO Outreach Opera-Tunities programs began more than 150,000 K-12 students have been enriched.  We began with performances in San Francisco in the Palace of the Legion of Honor's Florence Gould Theatre. Since 2005 GGO's home base is Marin County California producing in the Marin Civic Center theatres as our primary venue. Some of the famous operas we've presented include Madama Butterfly, Carmen, I Pagliacci. We also champion causes that improve quality of life through the operas. Recent projects include The West Coast Premiere of Menotti's "The Boy Who Grew Too Fast", developing it into an Anti-Bullying Opera Program for schools, and a new work, "Emancipation: Lincoln's African American Connections" for 5 professional singers and Gospel choir. We believe in the talent of the upcoming rising singers, directors, designers and composers. By engaging them we help develop their careers and build the artform of opera for the future.Our events include performances in theatres, acclaimed annual Aria Parties in private homes, Restaurant operas and Library Operas.We are a small budget company, with professional productions, supported by dedicated volunteers.
