What We Do:
Marin Literacy Program (MLP) has been providing free literacy services since 1985 to Marin County adults. Our volunteer tutors help their students in reading, writing and speaking to help them reach their full potential at work, at home and in the community.
Who We Are:
We need volunteer tutors who will commit to helping an adult learner gain or improve their literacy skills with a weekly 90 minute tutoring session for a minimum of six months. You do not need previous experience as a teacher or tutor, just a passion for reading and communication that you would like to share. We will give you the tools! Marin Literacy tutoring is predominantly done by volunteers in a one-on-one format, or in small groups, and addresses the individual needs of adult students. Volunteers attend an Orientation and Training in preparation for work with an Adult student. Our trained tutors are carefully matched with Marin residents over 18 who wish to improve their literacy skills and\additional family literacy instruction is offered to students responsible for children. The focus for students with children 0-5 is school readiness and reading to the children and ages 6-12 are focused on the student developing abilities to help with homework, understand memos from school and to be an engaged parent in their children's education. Inmate Literacy Services are provided to the Marin County Jail and San Quentin State Prison including a special parenting course for Mothers and Fathers. Our West Marin Literacy Program Services also offer one to one tutoring in addition to bilingual outreach back-up for the tutors and tutoring at the student's home or ranch. Additionally we offer ESL classes in West Marin, Tomales, Novato and other areas of the county were the need is presented.
